PLEASE NOTE:
In accordance with the 2 Government Gazettes dated, 11 August 2017 and 19 June 2020 respectively, regarding the handing over of First Aid from the Department of Employment and Labour to the various SETAs the requirements have changed.
These are they implications:
- First Aid ex Level 1 is now refferred to as – Basic First Aid
There are marginal changes here. Training remains at 2 days
- First Aid ex Level 2 is now refferred to as – Primary First AidThere are no longer any prerequisites to do Primary First Aid i.e. you do not have to have Basic First Aid however there is an HIV/AIDS course that has to be done to qualify. Training has now increased to 4 days
- First Aid ex Level 3 is now refferred to as – Advanced First AidThis level now requires the delegate to have a Primary First Aid Certificate before doing the Advanced First Aid and also requires an advanced course on HIV/AIDS. This requires the delegate to complete Primary First Aid with advanced HIV/AIDS before commencing on to Advanced First Aid. Training is also 4 days
In summary all three courses would need to be run separately.

- Patient Recovery

- Patient Recovery
- Company Specific: – injuries that are likely to occur within the workplace
– the nature of the activities performed

What will be covered?
- Demonstrate the principals of Emergency care in the Workplace
- Sustain basic level of preparedness for health emergencies in the Workplace
- Assess and manage an emergency scene in the Workplace
- Demonstrate primary emergency life support for adults, children, and infants
- Explain and manage shock
- Conduct secondary assessments of the sick or injured person and treat
- Record keeping and handover
- Company Specific injuries that are likely to occur within the workplace due to the nature of the activities performed
- Demonstrate an understanding of sexuality and sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS
- Demonstrate an understanding of sexually transmitted Infections and sexually transmitted diseases
- Describes means to cope and deal with sexually transmitted Infections and sexually transmitted diseases
- Describe human rights living with sexually transmitted Infections, sexually transmitted diseases HIV and AIDS

- Explain the principals of advanced first aid in emergencies
- Demonstrate an advanced levels of preparedness to deal with sudden illness and emergency
- Regulated equipment and additional equipment identified
- Storage and maintenance of equipment
- Assess and manage emergency scene disaster
- Emergency Scene Management and multiple injury management
- Principals of disaster management and plans
- Triage and Treatment
- Anatomy and Physiology in terms of illness and injuries
- Apply primary first aid life support for adults, children, and babies
- Oxygen therapy
- Measurement of blood pressure and pulse
- Explain causes of shock and the emergency treatment
- Current applicable legislation
- Common infectious diseases, testing, transmissions, and treatment
- Hand over reporting
- Company Specific injuries that are likely to occur within the workplace due to the nature of the activities performed
- Rights of those infected with HIV and AIDS
- Importance of knowing your status
- Explain ways to reduce transmission of HIV from mother to baby
- Explain post HIV exposure
- Explain importance of early treatment and access ARV’s

INTRODUCTION
More than 2000 people become HIV positive every day in South Africa, the largest percentage of those between the ages of 18 – 25 years.
The impact on Companies is significant as it reduces productivity and profits, skilled workers may be affected and become costly to replace them, care and counselling is a financial drain and employees are off work either because they are sick or are attending funerals or caring for loved ones who may have become ill.
